CHAPTER NINE

On Friday, Bonnie came into the lobby a little after three, while Natalie was printing out all the reservations for the weekend so that Bonnie could have them at her fingertips over the weekend.

It had been a busy week with a full guest list and even more hoping for a last-minute cancellation, and, fortunately, only one meeting with Candy, who was otherwise engaged at the café, no doubt on account of Amelia being her boss.

“I thought I’d poke my head in and see how things are going,” Bonnie said, glancing around the lobby. It was the quiet time of the day, past check-out and not quite check-in, and other than one couple who had arrived yesterday for a long weekend, the inn would be quiet until later this afternoon.

Natalie wondered what the real meaning behind the visit was, and decided to do them both a favor and volunteer some updates rather than put Bonnie in the position of having to ask. Had she gotten wind of the catering tasting, perhaps seen Jackson and Natalie sitting on the patio? She lived on the property; anything was possible.

But one thing that was absolutely not possible was anything more developing between her and Jackson. They were coworkers, nothing more. For so many reasons, that’s all it ever could or would be. And no amount of analyzing or replaying their conversation on the patio would change that.

He’d been playing along to appease the caterers. And she…she’d gotten swept up in a fantasy. Again.

Like most times that Bonnie dropped into the inn, she was dressed professionally, her slightly round figure covered in a long, flowing skirt and a blouse, showing that she still took her role here seriously.

When guests walked by, she gave them a nod with a smile, never one to press, but always reflecting a pleasant offer of assistance, should they require it.

Natalie, who wasn’t as used to interacting with guests on a regular basis, took note. Bonnie was both well respected and admired, and if Natalie had any hope of making this position last, then she’d be wise to learn from the best.

And she needed this position to last. It wasn’t perfect—one glance at the pub doors reminded her of that—but it was convenient and comfortable, and she felt like she was good at it, too.

“We’re fully booked for the weekend, no cancellations. Gabby’s assistant dropped off some new arrangements for the lobby this morning. Aren’t they beautiful?” Natalie motioned to the matching bouquets on the front desk and the large coffee table in front of the hearth that anchored the lobby seating area. In shades of buttery yellow, pink, peach, and a hint of purple, the flowers were both elegant and cheerful.

Bonnie bent down to smell the bouquet on the check-in desk and smiled through closed eyes. “Your cousin has quite a talent.”

“She does,” Natalie agreed. “And I’ve spoken with her about the arrangements for the rehearsal dinner, too.” Sure, that had been brief, but it was enough to know that Gabby had a plan in place and one that could be trusted.
